The Importance of Child Safe Blinds

Child-safety-week

During June we support the BBSA Keep it Safe campaign for child safety week, but child safety is at the forefront of what we do all year round!

Child safety is incredibly important to ensure all your window blinds are safe in your home especially those with young children or pets.

Why are some blinds unsafe around children or pets?

Many blinds come with control cords and chains which are used to operate the blinds, but these must be kept out of reach by fasteners which either fix your blind or to your wall depending on the type of blind you have.

We keep these in stock often at our showroom so if you wish to purchase one of these please give us a call at 01202 741671 so we can make sure we have the correct product in stock for your blind then it will be ready for collection from our showroom.

What blinds are child safe?

All blinds can be made child-safe thanks to their design, but things are changing. Here is a brief overview of what each style of blind can offer to be child safe.

Vertical Blinds
There are multiple ways to make your vertical blind safe!
Firstly, you have the option of a wand control meaning there are no loose cords at all to worry about. As standard with ourselves, all our vertical blind cords come with a breakable link which snaps open if too much force is applied to the blind.

We can also fit a chain tensioner can be fitted to your looped chain which then attaches to the wall and stops your cord from being loose on top of all things you can also have chainless weights at the bottom of your vertical blind meaning they are free-hanging but completely child and pet safe!

Roller Blinds
We can motorise this style of blind meaning there are no cables at all! As standard with ourselves, all our non-motorised roller blind cords come with a breakable link which snaps open if too much force is applied to the blind. We can also fit a chain tensioner can be fitted to your looped chain which then attaches to the wall and stops your cord from being loose.

Venetian Blinds
Along with their breakaway cord control which will come apart if extreme pressure is placed on the blind, a cleat can be fitted to this style of blind to keep the control cords out of reach while also maintaining their elegant look.

Please do not cut the control cords to make them shorter this will affect the use of the blind.

Pleated
Pleated blinds are fantastic as there are no control cords! You use the bottom bar to control how much light you allow into the room while maintaining their safety. There are often 2 or more cords running through the blinds though so please keep little fingers away with scissors as if this is snipped depending on where they may not be repairable.

Vision & Mirage Blind
We can motorise this style of blind meaning there are no cables at all! If you do not motorise this style of blind, it must come with a continuous chain, so a tensioner is required to make sure your blind meets the child safety requirements.

Allusion
This beautiful blind can have a motorised tilt system and thanks to its wand control it is already a child-safe product we do not need to do anything to this product to make it child safe.

Roman Blind
We can motorise this style of blind meaning there are no cables at all! If you don’t want to go motorised no problem, we can fit a chain tensioner can be fitted to your looped chain which then attaches to the wall and stops your cord from being loose.

Shutters
Shutters are already a child-safe product we do not need to do anything to this product to make it child safe. To limit any breakages, we would recommend going with the hidden tilt so the wand cannot be broken off but it’s that simple this is already childproof.

What do these device names mean?

We have used a few words here that may not make sense, so this is what we mean.

Chain-Break Connector
This is a small clip that holds two ends of your cord together when an extreme amount of pressure is placed on this it will snap apart. It is easy to reconnect if this does come apart.

Chain Tensioner
This device can come in multiple styles but fastens onto your wall and the cord loops through it to ensure it cannot come loose.

Cleat
This can be either fitted to the wall or directly onto your control cords depending on where they are being located. Your cord wraps around the two ends to keep them out of the way.

All of these devices along with other replacement parts are available at our showroom so please pop along or give us a call at 01202 741671 and we will be happy to help.
