Frequently Asked Questions About Awnings
What is a valance?
A valance is the pretty bit of fabric which hangs down the front of the awning. A valance does not only look pretty but its function is to block out the sun at certain times of the day.
What is a cassette?
We get that it's confusing trying to work out what is what so here is a quick breakdown of what the cassette types mean for us as not all companies are the same.
Full Cassette is designed to fully enclose the fabric, arms, and any mechanical parts against the British weather.
Half or Semi Cassette is designed for our awnings to fully enclose the fabric, but it does leave the arms and any mechanical parts out against the British weather.
Open or No Cassette is designed to offer no protection to your fabric, arms, or mechanical parts. They are often entry-level awnings which are used in locations where they have protection from overhanging roofs, balconies, or other overall protection.
Regardless of which awning you choose, you will still receive the same level of UV protection from the fabric and all cassettes & mechanical parts are made of powder-coated aluminium.
What weather can I use my awning?
You can use your awning in most weather conditions there are a few exceptions though. We would not recommend using an awning in strong winds, heavy rain or snow.
Can my awning be repaired?
Like most things, awnings can be repaired but this is depending on their age along with other factors. Not all awnings have the same components so we may not be able to help if we are not able to get the parts.
Are awnings waterproof?
Yes, awning fabrics are waterproof. Thanks to their Teflon & Scotch guard coatings they are designed to resist light rain showers. We do not recommend using your awning in strong winds, heavy rain, or snow.
How do I care for my awning?
If you need to clean your awnings body or fabric, please only use a clean cloth & water. We would not recommend you use any detergents or chemicals as this can damage the Teflon & Scotch guard water-repellent properties of your awning fabric.
How do I remove my valance?
Click here to this will take you to a step-by-step guide. If you are still unsure give us a call at 01202 741671 and we will happily talk you through the process.
How long is my awning guaranteed?
Your awning is guaranteed with us for a total of 5 years.
Do I need planning permission for an awning?
For most residential & commercial properties, you do not require planning permission. If you live in a block of flats you may have to get their approval before purchasing an awning. If you are thinking of having an awning installed on a listed building then you may need to seek planning permission.
What is the maximum wind speed my awning can withstand?
Unfortunately, it is impossible to say exactly how strong an awning is against the wind as there are many factors involved, so we would recommend installing a wind or sun and wind sensor.
What are the health benefits of having an awning?
As we all know, sunshine & UV rays can harm our health, so an awning can help protect you from the sunshine while still allowing you to enjoy your garden. Awnings are great for reducing the risk of Sunburn, protecting your eyes and reducing your risk of more serious health problems such as cancers.
